JBL Pulse, the ultimate party gadget?

Friday, 3 Jan 2014 | 12:00 AM ET

Imagine turning your living room into your own personal disco. One company is looking to keep the party going anywhere and anytime with its new portable Bluetooth stereo speaker with built-in LED lights.

The JBL Pulse speaker offers a colorful light show via speaker-top controls or through the JBL's MusicFlow app, which can be downloaded onto any iOS device. Users can adjust light intensity and choose colors, patterns and themes, says Helena Stone, editor-in-chief of Chip Chick.

Battery life for the small portable speaker varies. The battery can last up to about five hours with the light show turned on or about 10 hours with the light show turned off, Stone says.

But the JBL Pulse is entering a market already stacked with similar portable speakers. The Beats Pill and the Beacon Audio Phoenix are similar portable speakers, but without built-in LED lights.

For $200, the JBL Pulse sound quality is one of the best in its price range, says Stone.
