Fertility app gets its own supporting gadget

Getting pregnant or avoiding it may become easier than you'd think with a new gadget announced Tuesday from Boulder's Kindara, which already offers an app to help women chart their fertility.

The Wink looks like a lighter but inside there is all sorts of technology going on. There's a thermometer, which is four-times faster at recording temperatures because it uses thermistor technology, for a fast, precise measurement. A patent-pending tip allows for faster heat transfer from under the tongue to sensor. Plus, there's Bluetooth so Wink syncs with the Kindara app on a user's smartphone.

And if you are terrible at remembering when to take your temperature (since a woman's basal body temperature is a key fertility indicator), the Wink even subtly vibrates as a gentle reminder.

According to Kindara, the app has helped over 25,000 women get pregnant and 500,000 women avoid pregnancy. Users are reporting 100 pregnancies a day.

Kindara is taking preorders on Wink for $79. It ships in Spring 2015.

Kindara graduated from the hardware accelerator HAXLR8R back in 2012. It currently employs 8 people, including 6 in Boulder.
